Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the significance of parenting styles and parental attitudes in the process of shaping the autonomy of children with disabilities. Autonomy is understood as a multidimensional and long-term process that includes the ability to make independent decisions, a sense of agency, responsibility for one’s actions, and the capacity to act in accordance with an individual value system. The paper highlights the specific nature of autonomy development in children with disabilities, which, in comparison to typically developing children, requires more conscious, systematic, and needs-oriented support from parents or caregivers. This review article is based on an analysis of literature in the fields of pedagogy, special education, and developmental psychology. The selected parenting styles discussed in the paper include the democratic, authoritarian, and permissive styles, with particular emphasis on their influence on the development of children’s independence and decision-making abilities. Special attention is given to the phenomenon of overprotectiveness, which often accompanies the upbringing of children with disabilities and is frequently justified by concern for their safety. However, it is emphasized that excessive control, constant assistance, and limiting a child’s activity may lead to a reduced sense of agency, the reinforcement of dependence on others, and difficulties in making independent decisions. The article also underlines the importance of children’s ability to communicate their own needs as a key element in the development of autonomy. The conclusions drawn from the literature analysis indicate that supporting the autonomy of children with disabilities should be based on both providing adequate support and creating opportunities for independent action. Conscious parenting attitudes contribute not only to the development of autonomy but also to an improved quality of life and social functioning of the child.
