Sensory Processing Disorder in Children and Teenagers with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Context of Depressive Disorders – a Literature Review

Abstrakt:

Dzieci i młodzież z zaburzeniami w spektrum autyzmu (ASD) często doświadczają współistniejących zaburzeń psychicznych, w tym depresji. Szacuje się, że aż 70% osób z ASD zmaga się z innymi zaburzeniami psychicznymi. Według badań aż 37% osób z zaburzeniami w spektrum autyzmu będzie borykać się z zaburzeniami depresyjnymi w ciągu swojego życia. z kolei zaburzenia integracji sensorycznej (SPD) występują nawet u 96% dzieci z ASD, a ich występowanie jest jednym z kryteriów diagnostycznych zaburzenia ze spektrum autyzmu. Statystyki sugerują, że spora grupa osób z ASD cierpi jednocześnie na zaburzenia integracji sensorycznej oraz depresję, co skłania do rozważenia występowania korelacji między tymi czynnikami. Zarówno SPD, jak i depresja mogą znacząco wpływać na funkcjonowanie i jakość codziennego życia jednostki, w tym aktywność fizyczną, psychiczną oraz społeczną, a także przyczyniać się do występowania trudnych zachowań, szczególnie w wieku wczesnoszkolnym. Zaburzenia integracji sensorycznej wiążą się również z cierpieniem psychicznym, przez co istnieje prawdopodobieństwo, że mogą także przyczynić się do wystąpienia ciężkich zaburzeń depresyjnych.

Abstract:

Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience coexisting psychiatric disorders, including depression. It is estimated that up to 70% of individuals with ASD struggle with other mental disorders. According to the research, as many as 37% of individuals with autism spectrum disorder will face depressive disorders within their lifetime. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) occurs in over 96% of children with ASD, and its occurrence is one of the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder. Statistics suggest that a significant group of individuals with ASD simultaneously suffer from sensory processing disorders and depression, prompting consideration of a potential correlation between these factors. Both SPD and depression can significantly impact an individual’s functioning and quality of daily life, including physical, mental, and social activity, and can contribute to challenging behaviors, especially in early school years.. Sensory processing disorders are also associated with psychological distress, indicating a likelihood that they might contribute to the occurrence of severe depressive disorders as well.

Abstrakt:

Artykuł obejmuje analizę sytuacji osób z zaburzeniami ze spektrum autyzmu na rynku pracy oraz propozycje dostosowań, mających poprawić ich funkcjonowanie zawodowe. Praca i samorealizacja są istotne dla poczucia autonomii, jednak osoby z ASD często napotykają na trudności w znalezieniu pracy. Pomimo wielu pozytywnych cech i umiejętności osób z ASD, nadal istnieją społeczne przekonania i stereotypy, które prowadzą do marginalizacji i ograniczenia szans na rozwój zawodowy dla tej grupy. W artykule omówione zostały także problemy komunikacyjne, interakcyjne i sensoryczne, z którymi borykają się osoby z ASD w miejscu pracy. Opisane zostały też wskazówki, które mogą być cenne dla tych osób. Propozycje dostosowań obejmują zmiany w zakresie poszerzania świadomości społecznej, elektroniczną formę komunikacji oraz odpowiednie przystosowanie przestrzeni pracy. Istotne jest również uwzględnienie indywidualnych potrzeb osób z ASD. w społeczeństwie dążącym do inkluzji każda osoba powinna mieć możliwość rozwijania się zawodowo i uczestnictwa w życiu społecznym. Wprowadzenie odpowiednich dostosowań może znacząco poprawić sytuację osób z zaburzeniami ze spektrum autyzmu na rynku pracy, zapewniając im możliwość samorealizacji i integracji społecznej.

Abstract:

This article analyses the labour market situation of people with autism spectrum disorders and proposes adjustments to improve their occupational functioning. Work and self-realisation are important for a sense of autonomy, but people with ASD often face difficulties in finding work. Despite the many positive qualities and skills of people with ASD, there are still societal beliefs and stereotypes that lead to marginalisation and limited career opportunities for this group. The article also discusses the communication, interaction and sensory problems faced by people with ASD in the workplace. Suggestions for adjustment include changes to broaden public awareness, electronic form of communication and appropriate adjustment of the workspace. Tips that may be useful for these people are also described. It is also important to take into account the individual needs of people with ASD. In a society striving for inclusion, every person should have the opportunity to develop professionally and participate in society. Making appropriate adjustments can significantly improve the situation of people with autism spectrum disorders in the labour market, providing them with opportunities for self-realisation and social inclusion.
